The month of April is one many look forward to because it is at this point during the year that the weather begins to get a bit warmer. However, April is also known for its heavy rain showers, which means that homes will be more at risk to flooding. Because of this, you should figure out what your home’s flood risk is.

FEMA (or the Federal Emergency Management Agency) creates as well as updates flood maps that show the different zones for every part of the community. Go to their website to check the flood map and see what flood zone your property falls in.

You also need to figure out your BFE (Base Flood Elevation). This is the elevation at which your property has a 1 percent chance of flooding every year. The BFE is usually provided on the flood map. You’ll want the lowest floor of your property to be at least three feet above the BFE – if it isn’t, you may want to strongly consider raising your building.

Depending on what your flood risk is, you may want to purchase flood insurance. If you need help with renovations for homes with flood damage, contact us at Parker Young today.
