If your home has been flooded, then you’re probably a little bit overwhelmed when it comes to figuring out what you should do first. The following are the first cleaning steps that you should take after your home has been flooded:

Remove standing water – Use a wet vac, a hand bilge pump or a bucket to get rid of as much standing water as possible.

  • Turn on a dehumidifier – If you don’t have one, think about picking one up.
  • Ventilate the house – Once you’ve gotten rid of the standing water, open up all of your windows and use fans in order to help dry out the area.
  • Remove carpeting – Odds are if your carpet has been wet for more than two days, you’ll have to get rid of it. If you’ve managed to get it completely dry within a day or two, then there’s a chance you may be able to save it.
  • Throw out things – Porous things that came into contact with sewage should be tossed. Wet air filters, cardboard boxes, insulation and moldy ceiling tiles should be tossed.
