Georgia may not be located in “Tornado Alley” but tornadoes are frequent enough in the state that a prudent homeowner should make some contingency plans for the unexpected arrival of one. Stocking up on some canned goods and bottled water is a good idea but the effects of a tornado are usually short-lived so having a safe place to “ride out the storm” is far more important.
While there is no such thing as a totally tornado-proof room, a relatively secure one can be affordably and conveniently built in almost any home. First, the room should be located in the basement or in the interior of the house so that the exterior walls can provide added protection.
The walls of the saferoom are built with common materials but the studs (2’x4’s) and the sheathing (3/4”) should be doubled for extra strength. Lastly, even inside a structure, the door to the room remains a weak spot. Be sure to install superior-grade hinges and latches on your safe room.
