A Look at the Dangerous Molds You Should Avoid

  • Stachybotrys – Stachybotrys are part of the Aspergillus family and are very toxic. Reported to be a liver and kidney carcinogen, this mold can cause upset stomach and diarrhea. It can be identified as a greenish black slimy mold that grows on paper or wood that has been wet for a long period of time. It should be noted that it doesn’t grow on tile, linoleum or concrete.
  • Penicillium/Aspergillus – These molds are ubiquitous. Penicillium is usually found in moist clipboards, decaying fabrics, wallpaper and house dust. Aspergillus can usually be found in fabrics and damp wallboards.
  • Fusarium – Fusarium is isolated from grains and plants. It requires wet conditions and is usually found in drip pans, water reservoirs utilized for humidifiers and damp wallboard
  • Chaetomiumspp – Chaetomiumspp is one of the many fungi responsible for causing infection known as Phaeohyphomycosis. Exposure to this fungi can lead to Onychomycosis, cutaneous lesions, peritonitis and brain abscess. Chaetomium Atrobrunneum has been reported to be responsible for fatal deep mycoses. In addition to what’s listed above, Chaetomiumspp has also been linked to certain forms of cancer.
  • Ascospores – Ascospores are commonly found in nature or any outdoor environment. Some of the fungi found in the Ascomycete family include sexual forms of Chaetominum, Aspergillus/Penicillium, and other fungi that is often found growing in damp areas.
