The power can go out at any time during a storm. You’ll want to have some supplies around the home that will get you through the night – and possibly the next few days – if the power remains out. One thing we recommend having is candles. However, if you don’t have any candles, you can always make your own candles.

You could run down to the store to get candles – but this may not be a good idea during a storm, and even afterwards you may be competing with hundreds of other desperate candle buyers. Making your own is easier than you might think. Use newspaper to roll a thin wick. Tear off the wax casing from a block of cheese. Roll the wax around the newspaper wick and voila, you have a candle. Don’t have cheese wax? Cut a block out of your butter. Push a hole into it using a screwdriver, then stick a short length of cotton string down it to act as a wick. Wipe a bit of butter onto the wick to make it easier to light.
