About 77 percent of the people living in Georgia are somewhat prepared for some sort of natural disaster, according to a recent survey by the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) and Homeland Security. This is part of the Ready Georgia campaign to make people aware of evacuation routes and communications should a tornado or hurricane strike.

Georgia disaster prevention includes family safety planning in the event of  tornadoes, flood, fire or other emergencies. Families are asked to have a checklist of supplies, established communication procedures with children and  to know where shelters are located if they have to evacuate.

Advance information on potential hurricanes and tornadoes is available with weather radios and television. Information is also available on mobile devices.  People are advised to give themselves ample time to leave their homes or work locations and take shelter when necessary.

Although a hurricane may not make a direct hit on Georgia’s coastline, its torrential rains and high winds can still lead to power outages, flooding and washed-out roads and bridges.
