Use a battery-back up sump pump – A sump pump is an excellent system for the extraction of water from your basement. Make sure that you have one that contains a battery back up in case of a power outage.

  • Know where the water-main shutoff valve is – Find the water-main shutoff valve and label it. Make sure everyone in your home knows where it is. This way you can turn the water off immediately if there is a leak.
  • Install a whole-house leak detector – Whole house leak detectors use wireless transmitters to detect any leaks throughout your home. If a leak is detected, it will automatically shut off your water. This can be quite helpful if you are away from home for a long period of time.
